# 30 – #BetterPersonChallenge May 4

Happy Wednesday – #MayTheFourthBeWithYou

Today’s #BetterPersonChallenge is to Wake Up Early, but Make Rest a Priority!

Now you may say, how does this make sense? I’ll break it down…

When you wake up early, even though it may be painful, you can get a lot accomplished and clear your head. However, now that I’m older, I understand the importance of rest. This may be difficult as well, especially if you are a parent or a single parent at that. But I’ll try to give some examples and benefits.

Waking Up Early

I’m not a morning person, let me make that clear. But as you know, when you become a mother, you really don’t get to sleep late anymore, unless you’re extremely lucky. So even though I have not slept late for about 9 years, getting up early is still not easy for me. But there are some benefits that I am hoping they will help me get through the day easier.

So “my” challenge for this week is to wake up just a little bit earlier to do one or some of the following:

  • Nothing….wake up about 15 minutes earlier and lie awake and just enjoy the quiet. Clear my mind and get ready for the day.
  • Meditate – there are many apps that can help you do this, such as Head Space. This is all the rage lately and how it really changes peoples lives. This can be effective for treating stress, worry, focus, and much more.
  • Plan – organize and goal-set for the day/week.
  • Exercise – get it out of the way, you will feel so much better for the rest of the day.

Some other things I try to do to make my mornings go smoother are to make sure the kids backpacks are packed, jackets and shoes are by the door, and my breakfast/lunch is packed the night before. This way I can focus on getting the kids ready without chaos, as well as myself.

This may not always go as planned, for example, while getting ready one morning this week, my son was in the bathroom and all of a sudden I hear a large crash and a bunch of things breaking. I go running to the bathroom and the poor kid is scared out of his mind, crying, and the shelves I had over the toilet came crashing down and all my ceramics, towels, etc, were shattered on the floor.  Something I of course did not plan on happening that morning. Thank goodness I always try to have some buffer time for going out to the bus, just in case. (My son was fine thankfully…just scared!)

Making Rest a Priority

I know what you’re already thinking. There are not enough hours in the day to get any rest. I am thinking the same thing, but as I said, this is my “challenge” for the week.

Rest is soooo important and is good for your entire well-being. Trust me, I have a million things on my plate. Single mom, I work full-time, go to school part-time, I’m the cook, the cleaner, the laundry doer, I can probably keep going for another page. You get the point. So this is what I’m going to try to get a better rest (since I can’t actually add more hours to my day and I usually don’t sleep all that well):

  • Cut back on Coffee by at least 2pm.
  • Ban technology from my bed.  This is going to be a hard one.  I admit it, I’m hooked to my phone.  It contains my life!  It’s the last thing I look at before bed and the first thing in the morning.
  • Adjust my environment.  I need a very dark, cool room.  My kids many times also like to sleep with me, which affects my sleep.  Work on keeping them in their own beds.

I am also hoping that by changing my morning routine by some of the examples above, I will also be able to reduce stress and fall asleep faster.

Let me know if you have any tricks for starting your morning off right or how you end your evening to get a good sleep….I challenge you!

This was not sponsored by Head Space…just think their site is pretty cool!
